River Plate's Sebastián "El Loco" Abreu scored three goals in the club's 5-0 thrashing of Universidad San Martin of Peru in last night's Copa Libertadores group action. The final group match for both clubs was played at River's Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Los Millonarios now advance out of the group stage and will be keenly focused on capturing their third Copa Libertadores title. The Argentine club's last came in 1996.
Universidad San Martin will not advance out of the group stage although the future continues to look bright for this fast-rising Peruvian club. Universidad San Martin was formed in 2004 by a joint stock company. The company purchased Club Sport Coopsol as they were being promoted to the Primera Division and renamed the club Universidad San Martin. They won the Primera Division last season in 2007 for their first league title.
