The expected consensus is that a potent strikeforce aided by a willing midfielder or two will more often than not help teams leapfrog to the higher reaches of the table, but as to every trend there is courtesy of the exception.
Title aspirants Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Arsenal - the members of the top five - all have had plenty of success in front of goal this season, but the infuriatingly erratic Manchester City demonstrate that defensive frailites can be equally damaging in the pursuit for a respectable total points haul.
Fulham, Stoke City, Middlesbrough and West Brom, meanwhile, will undoubtedly be scouring Europe for an injection of creativity this month as they languish with less than one goal scored per game. The contrast here being that Fulham's stronghold back-four have filled in the absence of a goalscoring menace by performing the art of defending to near perfection on occasions, as they currently sit tenth and have achieved an impressive eight clean sheets - a figure only beaten by three members of the exclusive 'Big Four'.
