Albania: Super League Review 2008-2009

The sixty-eighth edition of the Albanian Super League was still in contention for KF Tirana and KS Vllaznia on the very last day, but the intriguing circumstances saw the duo's pathways intersect for the final occasion this term to determine the fate of the championship. Originating from the capital, Tirana aspired to extend their top-flight accolades to an unrivalled tally of 24 while Vllaznia presented themselves as an intimidating menace with nine league medals.

None of the personnel from the Tirana camp could be accused of suffering from nerves in the prime matches as this fixture, fundamentally a cup final as the victors would settle the debate, was approached in true professional conduct and perhaps the striking wealth of success celebrated over the decades roared on KF Tirana, who emerged unscathed to overcome Vllaznia with a relatively secure 2-1 scoreline, to another Albanian crown.

Golden shoe recipient Migen Memelli will return to Sweden's GAIS Göteborg in a buoyant nature, fortified with the assurances that he boasts a threatening presence in the latter third of the pitch having scored the second goal which doubled Tirana's valuable lead, while old-hand captain Devis Mukaj aptly struck the predestined winner.

Defending champions Dinamo Tirana will smart at the cross-city celebrations as the country's second most successful unit and 17-time winners fell to an unmemorable final standing of third, but the shattering scenario of 2005/06 victors KS Elbasani is all the more chilling as they floundered in the perils of the relegation places to assure demotion to the First Division.
