Let's face it, The Flames are one of the feel good stories of 2009. With a 100+ FIFA ranking, the team is fighting for a chance to compete in the 2010 World Cup as the squad sits in Group 5 with Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Côte d'Ivoire. While a berth in the 2010 WC is unlikely especially with Côte d'Ivoire in the group, the nation still has a great opportunity to qualify for the next African Cup of Nations. The top three teams from each group will qualify for the African tournament.
Oh, and in case you are counting, Malawi hasn't qualified for the World Cup and has only once qualified for the African Cup of Nations (1984). Is history about to be made?
The Flames next two matches:
June 6, 2009 Malawi vs. Burkina Faso in Blantyre, Malawi at Kamuzu Stadium
June 20, 2009 Guinea vs. Malawi
*Thanks to Malawi World Cup Team Blog for the 1984 African Cup of Nations info.

In 1984, Malawi made it to the first round of African Nations Cup hosted by Ivory Coast. Malawi were in Group B (Group of Death) along with Algeria, Nigeria and Ghana.
