It has only been two years since Man United lifted the Champions League on that soggy night in Moscow, but the chances of them doing so again seem further away than ever.
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson will deny it until he is blue in the face, but the Red Devils have been considerably weakened since that famous night in Russia.
For starters Ronaldo has since moved on to Real Madrid. The Portguese winger was an inspiration at Old Trafford but despite Fergie's resistance, an offer of £80 million was just too big to resist.
But the strange thing has been the lack of replacements. Ferguson has hardly spent a penny of the Ronaldo money, much to the fans' frustration, though he is quick to deny that is because of the hefty debts placed on to the club by American owners the Glazer family.
In the Premier League this season they have been inconsistent, conceding sloppy goals especially at Fulham and Everton - the latter of which scored two goals in injury time to Draw 3-3. People looking to bet on Champions League games should bear this in mind.
In the Champions League a dour 0-0 with Glasgow Rangers at Old Trafford was a major setback and sums up their start to this campaign. It appears United have lost that cutting edge to break teams down, while at the back they are prone to conceding sloppy goals. If you want to bet on Champions League winner, you may have to look elsewhere.
It is those two key problems that make me feel the Champions League is just too much of an ask this season, and given their play in the domestically, the Premier League might be too.
