Upcoming Match News: L.A. Galaxy to play Newcastle Jets

The L.A. Galaxy look ready to head down under after the Major League Soccer season concludes to play the A-League club Newcastle Jets.

The exhibition game could go off in November just as in 2007 when David Beckham and the Galaxy squared off against Sydney FC.

Jets executive chairman Ken Edwards noted that talks were ongoing between his side and the MLS club when speaking with Australian media.

"We're talking two dates at the moment, there is a date available in 2010 and if we're not successful with that there is another date in 2011 we're negotiating," Edwards said.

L.A. Galaxy: Three from Brazil join the squad for 2010

Dare I say a samba summer in L.A.?

Sao Paulo's Alex, a left-flank player, Juninho, a central midfielder and Leonardo, a central defender are on loan this year with the L.A. Galaxy, the 2009 MLS runner-up.

Summer is around the corner and that means The Home Depot Center's events calendar is heating up. To celebrate, the facility will host its Inaugural "Home Depot Center 5K/10K Run" on the 125-acre multi-sports campus on June 21 at 8 a.m. to benefit The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation.

Registration starts at $35 (with an option to upgrade for sideline tickets - $65) for the run/walk ($45 registration day of event) includes tickets to two exciting summer sporting events at The Home Depot Center - June 28 LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo and June 21 LA Sol vs. FC Gold Pride.

The 5K/10K run/walk course highlights the grounds of the 125-acre campus of The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. Participants will run a course that starts and finishes at the 10,000-seat track & field facility and includes the running through the 27,000-seat soccer stadium, 8,000-seat tennis stadium, as well as parts of the dirt trail of Avalon Blvd. and Victoria St. in Carson, Calif. A timing company will be used for those wishing to get their official race time from start to finish.

A portion of the proceeds from the 5K/10K Run will be donated to The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation, which provides financial and in-kind support for educational, recreational and social service programs to improve the lives of young people in the city of Carson and the Greater Southern California region. The foundation has donated more than $500,000 to youth organizations since opening the facility in 2003.

Five of note from the update:

1. L.A. scored three and conceded three in the two games played.

2. Three players accounted for the three goals -- of course, Landon Donovan was involved.

3. The Galaxy have now gone six straight without a defeat. I didn't know that.

4. Rookie midfielder Kyle Patterson went on loan this past weekend and scored a goal with Hollywood United.

5. Galaxy Deportivo, the Galaxy's official half-hour show in Spanish is back! Six years now and running. Very wise decision to bring back GD.

2009 MLS SuperDraft -- 5 Predictions

Here are five from the crystal ball. Let's check back next fall and see how right or wrong we were.

1. Lyle Adams will be a finalist for Rookie of the Year

2. Six first rounders will appear in at least 20 games. Last season there were two - Sean Franklin and Roger Espinoza.

3. Peri Marosevic will be the first rookie to score a goal.

4. Zach Simmons will record the first shutout.

5. Kyle Patterson will be 2009's MLS Rookie of the Year.

Zola Intends to Fight for Players

West Ham United's manager, Gianfranco Zola, intends to fight to keep his players from moving during the January transfer window. With Craig Bellamy and Robert Green leading the list of players leaving, Zola will attempt to keep as many as he can at Upton Park.

The cash generated from player sales would surely help owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. Bjorgolfur wants to sell the club ASAP as the worldwide economic crisis has found its way to the owner.

Who would be solid sells for The Hammers? Let's have a look.

1. Diego Tristán: The 32-year-old striker scored this weekend against Stoke City. Now is the best time to sell the Spaniard, preferably back to a second-tier Spanish side. He has rarely factored and as only made four league appearances.

2. Walter López: The 23-year-old Uruguayan defender/midfielder was signed under caretaker manager Kevin Keen's watch. He has not seen any Premiership action. Would a Championship or League One side be interested?

3. Josh Payne: The 18-year-old was on loan at Cheltenham Town until recently. He returned to West Ham on the 22nd of December. The midfielder should garner League One interest. He was named as 2008–09 captain of the West Ham Under-18 squad.

4. Luís Boa Morte: The 31-year-old winger is a talented veteran. He has played for three of the the four London Premiership clubs. Journeymen often are the first to go in a fire sale.

5. Joe Widdowson: The 19-year-old defender marked Becks at the 2008 MLS All-Star game. He could go out on loan again, but as noted, funds are needed.

Steven Lenhart Stars for the Crew

Back in March, Soccer City FC spoke with Azusa Pacific's Sven Simon. This past weekend, Simon's former teammate Steven Lenhart came on as a substitute in only his second MLS game with the Columbus Crew. He scored in the game against the L.A. Galaxy which ended tied 3-3.

Lenhart has altruistic goals when his professional career is over. One of which is Acirfa which operates out of Zambia. The non-profit outfits bikes for various members of the community including doctors allowing the medical workers to see several more clients due to their new-found mobility.
