Chelsea face defensive crisis

Chelsea are currently in the midst of a defensive crisis and could head to Russia next week to face Spartak Moscow minus captain John Terry, Alex and Jeffery Bruma.

Chelsea will be keen to extend their 100 per cent record in this season's Champions League when they face Spartak, but Carlo Ancelotti may have to patch together a central defensive partnership from whatever he has left of his injury-hit squad.

Terry's troublesome back injury has flared up again and the defender was forced to pull out of England's draw against Macedonia this week. It remains to be seen how serious the injury is, but Chelsea's captain will be a major doubt for this Chelsea's next league game against Aston Villa as well as next week's Champions League tie. Although the Champions League predictions suggest the London club will win the game, their problems will make it a harder task.

Brazilian centre back Alex injured his thigh in the 2-0 win over Arsenal and was initially ruled out for three weeks. The defender, who produced a contender for goal of the century during the Arsenal match, was reported to be back in light training but it isn't clear how far from match fitness he is. Another concern for the Chelsea boss was Jeffery Bruma, the youngster suffered an injury whilst away on international duty with Holland's under-21 squad.

This could prove to be Chelsea's downfall this season and the Champions League betting tips hint they will fail to win the trophy again. Since Roberto Carvalho's departure to Real Madrid, Ancelotti has failed to sign a replacement and that may prove to be an issue over the course of what is a long season. The Londoners should still have enough cover to get something out of their trip to Russia though.

Ferreira has played more than would have been expected (and played well) - hinting at Ivanovic playing more at centre back maybe? Especially if Bosingwa ever gets fit again.

I think if it comes to it he'll just play Essien there, he did it before and did OK...ish.
