Looking ahead to 2011 and the January transfer window is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet. With a host of experienced and talented Premier League players available for moves during January; here we look at just a few who are seeking a move:
Robbie Keane – A very talented player in his own right; Keane is a certainty for a move in the January transfer window. Currently 4th choice striker at Spurs behind Defoe, Crouch and Pavlyuchenko; Keane is too bigger talent even at the ripe old age of 30 to be sitting on the bench week in, week out. Keane knows just where the goal is, having scored better than a goal every 3 games during his career. He also still has an abundance of skill and despite his failure to perform in a Liverpool Shirt, is more than capable of walking into a lot of Premier League teams.
Steve Sidwell – Has never really settled since moving from Reading to Chelsea and now finds himself on the fringes of the Aston Villa first team. A combative, box to box midfielder, Sidwell needs a move away from the club to settle down and fulfil the potential he showed at Reading. Likely to move on to create funds for Gerard Houllier, Sidwell is good enough to remain in the Premier League, but needs to go to a club where he will be first choice in the centre of midfield.
Emmanuel Adebayor – Seems to have fallen out of favour at Manchester City this season, after scoring 14 goals in only 26 appearances in 2009/10. Adebayor is a top striker, who has shown throughout his career that he is more than just a big target man. He is capable of scoring all types of goals and is a constant menace to defenders with his sheer presence alone. A controversial character at times; like Keane, Adebayor is too good to be warming the bench and will be seeking a move in January unless he is promised first team football by Roberto Mancini.
Jonathan Woodgate – Has been made available for a loan move in January by Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp in order to aid his recovery from an on-going groin injury. Unfortunately for Woodgate, injuries have thwarted his once promising career and Tottenham have more than enough cover at centre back to let Woodgate go out and gain some much needed game time. He would be a great coup for any Premier League club until the end of the season as there is no doubting his talent.
Roque Santa Cruz – The second player in Manchester City’s striking artillery seeking a move away from Eastlands due to a lack of first team football. Santa Cruz has actually been told by Mancini he can leave the club, as he is clearly not in his future plans. Having scored 23 goals in 57 games for Blackburn Rovers, Premier League managers know that Santa Cruz can score goals in this league. A natural goal scorer is always on a manager’s wish list and I’m sure the powerful Paraguayan will have no shortage of offers come January.

2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine Interview: Clemson midfielder Tommy Drake
Clemson senior midfielder Tommy Drake (5-8/158) kindly spoke about his college career, his Major League Soccer Player Combine invitation and his training schedule as he gears up for the event.
Q. Care to comment the team's performance in 2010?
Tommy Drake: In 2010, our team was extremely fit and everyone on the team was committed to improving every day. Our biggest strength was our ability to outwork our opponents.
Q. Were you pleased to hear that you had been invited to the combine?
Tommy Drake: I was extremely excited when I received my invitation. Playing professional soccer has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid.
Q. How is your first touch being that you have been out of competitive play for a few days now?
Tommy Drake: I think my first touch is up to par. I've been kicking around with other players in the area and joining in on some training sessions with teams from my youth club.
Q. What will you focus on in training as you prepare for the combine?
Tommy Drake: The main thing I will focus on in preparing for the combine is my fitness level. To perform at the professional level you need to be extremely fit.
Q. How will you exploit your strengths such as running at defenders out wide down at the combine?
Tommy Drake: At the combine, I'm just going to relax and do what I do best. If I work as hard as I can and focus on performing at my best, the rest will take care of itself.
Q. Finally, can you sum up your experience of playing collegiate soccer at Clemson?
Tommy Drake: Playing at Clemson and in a league like the ACC has been an incredible experience. I've played with and against some amazing players and it's definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life.

Spurs give another Milan date
After their heroics over their city neighbours, AC Milan are now the latest club to be in the sights of Tottenham Hotspur.
The London club were drawn against the Italian giants in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Given Spurs won their group they could have hoped for an easier draw - Chelsea got FC Copenhagen for example - but it does set up a mouth-watering clash for fans and neutrals alike.
Milan finished runners-up in their group, but the fact that group contained a rampant Real Madrid side negates any feeling that Milan have under-performed in the competition and the Champions League betting reflect that.
The presence of striking talent like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alex Pato and Robinho in the Milan line-up means the Spurs defence, not exactly the most watertight in Europe this season, will be severely tested.
But such has been Harry Redknapp's attitude to the competition this year he will again send out his players to attack. They have scored at least two goals in every game in Europe this season, including the qualifier against Young Boys, and I see no reason why they can't carry that on against Milan. They have an array of attacking talent on offer - Defoe, Coruch, Ban Der Vaart, Bale, Lennon to name but a few - so why not use them? Anyone looking to bet on Champions League games involving Spurs should expect plenty of goals.
It is a refreshing approach to the competition and one that has seen them win many admirers over the past few months.
With away goals now coming into play Spurs will head to the San Siro to attack and I wouldn't be surprised if they head back to the Lane with a few away strikes in the bag to build on.

Liverpool flops want success "so much"
At times this season, and at the end of the last Premier League campaign, it seemed for all the world that Liverpool's form was suffering as a result of more than a few names who didn't appear to want to wear the shirt.
With Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel receiving the majority of the criticism in this respect, even established first team players weren't spared from accusations from those regularly placing a free sports bet of not trying hard enough to win crucial games or do the job efficiently against lesser opposition.
However, remarkably, beleaguered boss Roy Hodgson has stated that the reality is almost the precise opposite of many pundits' assumptions, with the Liverpool manager stating his concerns that a few of the players are trying too hard to recover their form and state their claims for a berth in the starting line-up.
Last night saw Liverpool struggle to provide anything to keep the loyal Anfield faithful warm in an uninspired display against Utrecht and, whilst the game didn't mean anything to either side's chances of qualifying from their Europa League group, Hodgson would surely have been hoping for some of his stars to burst to life once again and prove why they were deemed worthy of being signed to a famous old club like Liverpool.
With those interested in the betfair free bet code stating that Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen in particular failed to do anything approaching that, Hodgson has revealed that their failure can be put down to wanting it "so much".
Although there may be "no lack of desire, commitment" and "effort" from the Reds players, that's no consolation for the long-suffering Liverpool fans whose desire to see their team make an impact in the league continues. They can now just hope that a game against Hodgson's previous club, Fulham, sparks them into life at just the right time this weekend.

2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine Profile: Indiana Defender Rich Balchan

Photo Credit: Mike Dickbernd, IU Athletics
Long known as fertile ground for the professional game, Indiana University sent another member from its men's soccer program to Major League Soccer's player combine. Senior defender Rich Balchan accepted his invitation last week as he joined the long list of former Hoosier players to compete at the annual event.
The four-year starter and 2010 first team All-Big Ten selection showcased his versatility this past year playing in both the midfield and back line. He projects as a defender at the next level but the ability to switch positions could be useful at the combine where players often play multiple positions. Even more so, versatility is always a positive at the professional level.
"Versatility is very attractive to professional clubs because as every club faces adversity, players are needed to step out of their comfort zone a bit and play different positions to help the team," Balchan said via email.
Balchan helped the Hoosiers to the 2010 Big Ten regular season title and played a pivotal role in the team's deep playoff run. One of the final sixteen teams in the Division I tournament, Indiana lost to eventual College Cup champions Akron.
"Here at IU, we enter every season with very high expectations of winning a national championship, so our fate being decided at the hands of Akron in the sweet sixteen was disappointing," the defender said.
"However, I am very excited about the direction of the program under Todd Yeagley as we made great strides this past year."
The upcoming combine participant took time to speak with former teammate Eric Alexander. Now with FC Dallas, Alexander parlayed a successful 2010 Major League Soccer Player Combine performance into a professional career. "His biggest point of emphasis was to show up in top fitness as well as play loose and just have fun," Balchan said.
Focused on all aspects of his training, Balchan's hard work could help him join his former teammate at the next level.
"I am pushing my fitness as that is something I have complete control of. I've been in the weight room with the strength and conditioning coach here at Indiana University pushing my fitness beyond what it was during the season. Also, I have been getting some touches in to make sure that I am technically sharp."

2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine Profile: UAB Defender Curtis Ushedo
Major League Soccer just released the initial list of invitees for the 2011 player combine. Roughly 50 seniors make the trip each year to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the event. Several underclassmen – including the highly sought after Generation Adidas players – also attend.
Curtis Ushedo, a senior at the University of Alabama–Birmingham, was pleased and excited when he heard the he was invited.
"I think anytime someone gets an opportunity to play with the best players and be showcased as a possible prospect, it's so surreal because you dream about it and work so hard to get there and all of a sudden the opportunity is in your lap," Ushedo said.

Fergie still embarrassing himself with his petulance
Sir Alex Ferguson has had a major influence on Premier League football over the years and has also had a big say on the careers of youngsters up and down the country. However, he continues to undermine his admirable actions by refusing to let bygones be bygones by granting the BBC access to his pearls of wisdom once more.
Perhaps Fergie would attract some sympathy from long-suffering football fans if his continuing refusal to speak to the BBC was a result of the appalling quality of Match of the Day, but the fact remains that his silence is the result of an allegation made many years ago, which shows that Fergie is almost in the same boat as FIFA in getting its knickers in a twist over the fact that the UK has a free press.
With Fergie surely aware of the fact that he is an important role model to kids, and the fact that Manchester United do so much to help those who are disadvantaged (if in doubt of this, just speak to the disabled fans who found themselves taken to Moscow free of charge for the Champions League final triumph against Chelsea), it is surely time for him to act his age and start talking to the BBC once again. The Manchester United betting suggests the club will win trophies again this season, but their manager won't be getting any prizes for media relations.
However, with the Premier League still refusing to risk angering one of the league's biggest personalities, it appears that there isn't much pressure being placed on Fergie to open up communication with the BBC. As a result of this, it seems that Fergie has the perfect opportunity to end his boycott with some of his dignity still intact rather than being forced to do so by others.
Meanwhile, the Sunderland betting tips suggest the side could challenge for Europe this season.
The club has enjoyed a successful run of late and is just three points off fifth.

2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine Profile: Notre Dame Forward Steven Perry
Men's soccer at the University of Notre Dame is an appealing option for many of the nation's most gifted prep players. One can obtain an education from a first-rate academic institution, play with some of the collegiate game's most accomplished coaches and players at elite facilities in the Big East Conference and use your play on the field as a springboard to the professional game.
The only issue -- playing time. With so many top players coming to campus, finding time on the field can be difficult. But when your chance arrives, you have to make the most of it.
Senior forward Steven Perry seized upon his opportunity of extended play in 2010 and parlayed his increased minutes into a stellar individual season that landed him on several postseason teams. His fine season of course ended with an an invite to the 2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine (January 7-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida).
Perry, who had played in 55 contests but only started 13 games in his first three seasons with the Irish, scored 12 goals and added four assists. The goals scored were both team and career highs.
Of those 12 goals, five were game winners.
The offensive outburst, thanks in large part to the fact that the forward started all 20 matches for the Irish in 2010, allowed Perry to be recognized for several postseason accolades at season's end including All-Big East First Team and All-Great Lakes Region Second Team.
"I had the support of my teammates and coaches and couldn't have achieved this success without them," Perry said as he finished up his most recent pre-combine training session.
Unfortunately for Perry and his teammates, the season ended with an exit from the 2010 NCAA Division I Championship tournament after Dartmouth defeated the Irish 2-1 in the second round. Perry spoke about the disappointing end to the season but added that he is proud of the team's overall performance in 2010.
"We obviously had unfulfilled potential and came up short both in the Big East and NCAA tournaments, but overall in 2010 we did quite well as a team."
With the 2010 collegiate season in the books, Perry, along with teammates Jeb Brovsky and Bilal Duckett, now spends much of his time training for the Major League Soccer Player Combine. Not all invitees are able to attend the event with former collegiate teammates and the Irish forward believes this is an advantage to be exploited.
"It is a great advantage because whenever you are put in a pressure situation it is good to have your teammates there, Perry said. "We will encourage each other, offer up advice and be able to talk in between our time on the field."
Perry also turned to former Notre Dame players including Bright Dike and Justin Morrow to talk with them about their combine experiences.
"I had a chat with them about what to expect and to get advice on my playing style since they know my game," Perry said.
The Edmond, Oklahoma native will now continue to work on staying fit, keeping his first touch sharp and his finishing abilities fine-tuned. He also will look to keep mentally focused, a key ingredient to doing well at the MLS Combine.
Oh, and like many players who compete in the Midwest, he is looking forward to the warm weather of South Florida.
"I welcome it," Perry said.

2011 Major League Soccer Player Combine Profile: JMU Forward CJ Sapong
CJ Sapong is focused on his potential professional career after a successful collegiate season. "I am trying to get to the next level," Sapong said.
The forward leaves James Madison as one of the program's all-time players. Sapong ranks fifth in points (95), seventh in goals (37) and fourth in game-winning goals (12). He also earned four All-CAA First Team selections from 2007-10 culminating in being named the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year.
This past fall, the senior scored 12 goals, four of which were game winners, and added nine assists. He was also named as a captain for the Dukes. "I tried to bring cohesiveness to our team," Sapong said.
Now, the former JMU player will join 53 other Division I college seniors from January 7-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the 2011 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine.
Sapong is excited for the opportunity and currently training for the event. He has spoken to several former combine invitees including 2010 MLS draftee Adam Welch. The two competed at Reading United AC in the PDL this past summer.
"I am confident in my abilities," Sapong said. "It's important to settle down and play well at the combine."

McCarthy wants to get fans smiling
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy knows his side's fans need a boost in the midst of a relegation battle, and he has his hopes pinned on a derby day victory to put smiles on their faces.
The Molineux outfit are second bottom of the Premier League and on a run of ten defeats in their last 13 matches. It seems highly likely that Wolves fans are preparing for a long relegation battle given the fact their side have been struggling to both keep clean sheets and score goals - it is 22 games since Wolves kept the opposition out. Anyone looking to bet on Premier League weekend games should remember this.
McCarthy, who saw his side go down 3-0 to Blackburn Rovers last time out, is preparing his team for the visit of second city rivals Birmingham City on Sunday and he wants this game to be the one his side show they are still willing to fight for their survival.
The fans could worry as their boss has never managed a win over Birmingham in six attempts, but McCarthy knows taking all three points this weekend could be the catalyst to inspire an improved run of form that could pull Wolves out of the Premier League relegation dogfight.
"It's a bit more than three points now isn't it?" he said.
"I'd settle for three points out of any game at the moment, but because of local pride and bragging rights, we need to get the points at home."
The weekend Premier League betting suggests Wolves are in for a tough time, and they will have to find something from somewhere if they are to grab a much needed win.
The manager has added that he would be happy if his team started to "win ugly" in their coming games. Whether wins come in a pretty manner or otherwise should be irrelevant at the moment to Wolves fans, no matter how the points arrive they are desperately needed if the club are to avoid relegation this campaign.

Ramires singing the Blues at Stamford Bridge
There have been many reasons for Chelsea's recent struggles both on English soil and, after last night's French humiliation at the hands of Marseille, on foreign soil too, with the Blues now slipping from their position as favourites on most odds comparison sites to win the league. However, perhaps one of the most unexpected problems the Blues have had to deal with has been the complete failure of Ramires to settle in at the club and adjust to life in English football.
One decent performance against Arsenal earlier this campaign aside, Ramires has flattered to deceive and, on the whole, failed to show to pundits, fans, or bookies even the slightest hint that he's capable of justifying the hefty £18 million price-tag attached to his name when Chelsea completed his move from Benfica.
Earlier this season, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed that Ramires, although not the tallest of competitors in midfield, has the strength it takes to succeed against even the best opposition. Whilst conceding that the player is finding it tough to adapt to the Premier League, Ancelotti seemed confident that, in time, the Blues would see the best of Ramires, but so far that has clearly failed to materialise.
Last night against Marseille, the player looked lost in a midfield dominated by the French side, whilst a lack of creativity from him with the ball hampered Chelsea's play in the final third. Although Ramires is apparently finding it trickier to adjust to life at Chelsea since he's having to plug the gaping hole left by the injured Frank Lampard, with the anchor role in midfield thought to be more to his preference, a player worth the amount of money he apparently is should possess enough versatility to do at least a half-decent job in several other positions on the pitch.
Ancelotti has revealed his belief that Chelsea are playing with an unacceptable level of fear at the moment and no player seems to embody this physically as much as Ramires, who tends to look like a lost puppy on the numerous occasions he finds himself out muscled in the middle of the park and fails miserably to hide his lack of self-belief when a shot towards goal flies high and wide into the stands.
If Chelsea do want to get their campaign back on track this weekend against Tottenham, they'll just have to hope that Lampard's recovery continues well over the next couple of days.

Pardew faces tough task to impress
Usually when a new manager joins a football club a fresh feeling of new found optimism sweeps through the air.
The players are extra motivated, keen to impress, the fans have an extra spring in their step and the ’honeymoon period’ often yields a few early results.
Somehow I don’t expect that to happen up at Newcastle and neither do those following the latest scores at St James’ Park.
The supporters were incensed at the news of Chris Hughton’s sacking earlier this week. The former Tottenham assistant was a popular figure with the Geordie faithful after re-building the shattered squad following relegation in 2009, leading them to the Championship title and guiding them to a comfortable mid-table position in the Premier League.
They have a reputation for being the division’s resident crisis club and in the past their passionate fans have often contributed to the feeling of hysteria that surrounds St James’ Park.
But on this occasion this was all of owner Ashley’s own making. The fans appreciated Hughton for what he did and saw him as the safe pair of hands the club needed.
Those assessing the Live football scores regularly believe that Ashley’s bizarre desire for someone with more experience has created needless disruption within a club keen to have a nice, calm, uneventful season – for once.
The appointment of Alan Pardew – hardly the big name the sacking of Hughton justified – has further riled the supporters.
They will, as ever, get behind their team but it can’t be denied that Pardew will have a fight on his hands if he is to appease the supporters who feel betrayed once more by their club’s chairman - He
received only 14 votes in a poll run by a local newspaper, less than 2% of the vote.
Pardew faces a tough baptism against Liverpool on Saturday, though I expect he will have more than just the opposition to overcome in the coming weeks.

Senderos boost for Fulham
Fulham could be handed an early Christmas present this year, with the news Phillipe Senderos is edging closer to making his long awaited debut for the club. The defender joined Fulham on a free transfer from Arsenal in the summer, only to rupture his achilles heel in training days before the start of the season.
The defender and the club haven't gone as far as to set a date for his return to action but Senderos confirmed he was making a good recovery.
"The cast is off now and I'm walking without crutches again which feels great. The rehabilitation is going well and I'm on schedule, which is pleasing," he said. Fulham have been unfortunate on many occasions this season and find themselves fourth from bottom down to their fair share of bad luck.
A hefty injury list, coupled with a number of narrow losses in the league, have left Mark Hughes' side just a point clear of the relegation zone with a third of the season gone, although the Fulham betting suggests they should improve soon.
In all fairness, Senderos' absence hasn’t had a major impact on the club's fortunes this season. The Fulham defence has been pretty solid all season, conceding only 18 league goals. It has been in attack where they have come up short so far this campaign.
The long term injury to Bobby Zamora hit the club hard and summer signing Moussa Dembele has had his own injury issues, disrupting his start at the club. The return to action of Andy Johnson has come at the perfect time for Hughes, who is looking for one of his strikers to step up and provide the goals that Zamora would have done.
The former Everton striker has missed much of the last two years and may not be the answer to Hughes' problems. It is going to take Johnson a fair while to reach 100 per cent fitness and transfer rumours suggest the club may be forced to dip into the market come the new year.
Despite their disappointing start to the season, Fulham won’t be overly worried about a relegation battle this season. There is plenty of quality in this Fulham squad and Mark Hughes is still one of the league's best managers.

Arsenal’s wounded no longer wanted?
Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie are players who would normally be considered as world class and simply vital to any future success enjoyed by Arsenal Football Club both on home soil and European competition. However, as they continue to look like permanently injured players, and with Arsenal putting together a good run of form without them that has sparked great interest in the side on odds comparison sites, they are increasingly looking like expensive luxuries that the club should be cashing in on.
With young Jack Wilshere having shown that he can step up to the plate in Fabregas’s absence, and Arsenal having shown that they have a decent number of options up front in Van Persie’s absence, the club have begun to reap the rewards of investing astutely in their squad.
Should Barcelona still wish to spend big money on Fabregas, and if clubs want to spend the levels of cash that would encourage Van Persie to leave the comforts of north London, then Wenger could use the money raised to fund a splurge on the likes of Gary Cahill or a world class goalkeeper.
With improving both of these positions currently appearing far more vital to Arsenal's title chances in the bookmaker odds than keeping hold of players who are almost not worth considering part of Arsenal's first choice eleven, perhaps a marquee signing could even lift the spirits of the club’s fans as well, with Gooners increasingly beginning to feel that the club is heading in the wrong direction.
However, with Wenger lacking in experienced players, he is likely to be reluctant to release two individuals who have been at the club during its more successful years because of their importance to the club off the pitch.
Whether or not Wenger chooses to cash in on his star players in the near future, the time has surely finally come to accept that he needs to invest in his side's back line or risk continuing to embrace failure as the norm at the Emirates.

Lack of firepower holding Fulham back
Fulham fans may have seen their beloved former manager Roy Hodgson struggle badly to adjust to life at one of the league’s big boys, with Liverpool fans not exactly welcoming him into their lives on Merseyside, but it is struggles closer to home that will currently be occupying the minds of the Fulham faithful.
After the highs of last season, Fulham wouldn't have been expecting to be sitting in 17th place in the league after 15 games. However, that's the reality facing the club right now, with the main problem leading to that league position clear for all to see. The problem seems to lie in the goals column, with their goal difference currently -3. This stat is a massive improvement on the figure for the likes of West Ham and Wigan, who have goal differences of -12 and -15 respectively, but you can't deny that in front of goal, Fulham have difficulties. Indeed, the Premier League best odds suggest they could be in real trouble.
In fact, Wigan and West Ham are the only teams to have scored less goals so far this campaign than Mark Hughes's men. A lack of cutting edge in front of goal, with the loss of Bobby Zamora proving to be extremely costly after all, has been evident in many of Fulham's games and is responsible for preventing the side from pushing on in their games to turn lacklustre draws into crucial wins. Over-reliance upon Clint Dempsey, who has stepped up fairly well in Zamora's absence, is a further problem in this respect, with the player grabbing five of the team's 14 goals. They certainly don't look like Premier League best bets for a top half finish.
With the pressure mounting on Hughes at the club and the players handing him the dreaded public vote of confidence this week, the Fulham manager will have to hope that the team's creative players step up to the plate over the next few weeks and score the goals that can improve the club's precarious league position.
