Back Ronaldo to hit the goal trail

Cristiano Ronaldo fired out a warning to the rest of Europe last week when he bagged four goals in Real's win over Racing Santander.

The Portuguese winger has been in scintillating form of late scoring eleven in six league and cup matches.

One of his strikes came in the 2-0 Champions League win over Milan, a result that put his side five points clear at the top of Group G and virtually secured a place in the knock out stages and the Champions League promotions reflect this.

Real have been forced to live in the shadow of rivals Barcelona recent years, with the Catalan team lifting the European Cup in 2006 and 2009. A new Galacticos era was supposed to lift the gloom but despite a vast outlay, including £80 million on Ronaldo himself, the club still finished second behind Barca last year.

But this year could be different as they have snared the special one, Jose Mourinho, from Inter Milan. Mourinho a league winner in three countries and a double Champions League winner, is the ideal man to turn Real from a team of glamour individuals to a winning unit.

Results in recent weeks it suggests he is slowly doing that and Ronaldo, just as he was at United, is at the centre of things. The Champions League best odds suggest he can drag his side to glory.

It was only a couple of years ago that the 25-year-old bagged 42 goals for Man United in a season that ended with the Red Devils winning the European Cup.

Given his performances so far this season it would be a good bet to back him to achieve a similar goal haul and help Real to Champions League glory in the final at Wembley next May.

Manchester United v Spurs: Where's the value?

Thinking about making a soccer bet this weekend? Want to increase the excitement levels of the soccer action slightly? Or maybe you have a burning desire to learn how to use Betfair and need a game to focus on?

Well, how about taking a look at Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs travelling to Old Trafford for a game that the hosts will be desperate to win in order to continue the momentum from last weekend, when they secured their first away win of the season at Stoke. With United looking far from convincing so far this season, and with off the field issues impacting upon their efforts on the pitch, with the Wayne Rooney saga sure to be an unsettling influence, it's something of a surprise to see Tottenham rated as a 5/1 shot to get a win at the home of the Red Devils.

Remember this is the side that Wayne Rooney had such a lack of faith in that he initially refused to sign a new contract at the club; it's also the side that allowed West Brom to bounce back from 2-0 down to end the game with a creditable 2-2 draw.

Having said this, a Red Devils win should be on the cards, despite Tottenham's good form this season; United have a point to prove on home soil and should go about their business with a level of professionalism that results in all three points.

Perhaps of more interest to those who know how to gamble is the first goalscorer market. You'll have heard all the hype surrounding Javier Hernandez, unless you've been hiding in a remote cave somewhere, and with the form he's in, you wouldn't want to bet against him scoring first. He's shown a real killer instinct in front of goal in several United games so far this season, and was instrumental as a substitute in the team's midweek Carling Cup win, so may steal the show once more this weekend.

This is the year for Chelsea

They have suffered heartbreak in the Champions League, but this is the year is will all go right for Chelsea.

From Barca's last minute semi-final winner in 2009, John Terry's penalty miss in 2008 or Louis Garcia's "phantom goal" in 2005, Chelsea have not had the rub of the green when it comes to the crunch in the Champions League.

Russian owner Roman Abramovich is determined to turn his side into European Champions and after so many setbacks he turned to Carlo Ancelotti to do just that.
Ancelotti is vastly experienced – he took charge of his 100th Champions League game last week – and he knows how to turn a side in Europe's best.

Last year he managed to mould the Blues into a free flowing attacking outfit that romped to the Premier League title.

They sit top of the league yet again but Ancelotti must know the focus of attention will be on Europe this season and the Champions League best odds suggest they have every chance of claiming glory.

They have begun well in their group with three wins from three. The midweek win over Spartak Moscow on a freezing plastic pitch in Russia, and in the same Stadium where they suffered final heartbreak in 2008, was a sign of a side showing increasing maturity in the competition.

They have the players, they have the manager and I think crucially, they have the belief, anyone looking to bet on Champions League winner should remember this.

For that reason I think they will banish their Champions League hoodoo and lift Europe's biggest prize.

Roberto happy with the Baggies

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo has put all rumours of him moving to a bigger club to one side and has made it clear he is “very happy” at the Hawthorns. Since moving from MK Dons to the Baggies, Di Matteo has been impressive, leading the club to promotion in his first season.

Since that promotion, West Brom have settled into the new season well and the club lie in fifth place after nine games, much higher than those betting on Premier league expected them to be at this stage.

The Italian manager has been linked with a number of other clubs recently but insists he isn’t looking too far ahead, saying “I am very happy where I am and very grateful for the opportunity I have been given here, You can't have a long-term plan as a manager because you have a few bad results, you get questioned and then you get a ticket for your holidays.”

West Brom’s impressive return to the top flight carried on last weekend when Fulham were the latest side to come unstuck against the newly promoted side, losing 2-1. The West Brom win came courtesy of goals from Youssuf Mulumbu and Mark-Antoine Fortune after a Scott Carson own goal gave the visitors an early lead.

The Baggies will look to continue their impressive league form this weekend when they travel to fellow new boys Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Di Matteo will be hoping to leave the seaside with more than a kiss-me-quick hat and a bag of candy-floss.

It looks as though the classic yo-yo side may well be putting down some roots in the Premier League. If they keep up their current form, they will even be involved in UEFA Europa League betting next season!

IFA Premiership Football: Linfield F.C. scores 8 on bewildered Crusaders in Belfast match-up

If not for Crusaders' Jordan Owens (34'), the match could have been even more lopsided.

Two early goals from forward Mark McAllister (3' and 18') saw Linfield, Northern Ireland's most elite football program, quickly open up the lead.

Only six minutes later "Big" Jim Ervin (24') made it three to zero but the scoresheet was to be edited two more times before the end of the half as Curtis Allen scored in the 34th minute and Peter Thompson added a 45th-minute goal.

Three more second-half goals from Linfield -- Aaron Burns (55'), Curtis Allen for the brace (66') and finally 24-year-old Northern Ireland international midfielder Jamie Mulgrew in the 72nd -- ended the day's offensive outburst by the IFA title holders.

July 21, 2010 - Trondheim, Norway - epa02256714 Norwegian Rosenborg BK vs Linfield FC of Northern Ireland for a second round UEFA Champions League qualifying match at Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim, Norway, Thursday evening July 21, 2010. Picture shows Linfield Damien Curran trying to contain Rosenborg player Steffen Iversen (left) in first half action.

Table leaders Rosenborg and Tromsø, the best matchup in the Tippeligaen this weekend, should be an action packed event filled with goals as some of the league's top scorers square off.

30-year-old Norwegian international Steffen Iversen (14) and 30-year-old Swedish striker Rade Prica (11) have combined for 25 of Rosenborg's goals this year.

22-year-old Brazilian centre forward Kayke has 5 goals in only 8 league appearances for Tromsø.

Both Iversen and Kayke have also collected one hat trick each on the season.

Prediction: The home side seems to have the edge, although Tromsø could cause the table leaders some fits.

My guess -- Rosenborg 3-2 Tromsø

Transfer Rumours: Manchester United Transfer Rumours - Wayne Rooney releases statement regarding his recent contract talks with Sir Alex Ferguson

Below follows Wayne Rooney's statement regarding his failed contract talks with Manchester United that he released earlier today:

"I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad. I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract. I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it.

It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?

For me its all about winning trophies—as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.

Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18. For Manchester United’s sake I wish he could go on forever because he’s a one off and a genius."
